I have a really good excuse.....

Here's the story. Last Friday....

I went in for a routine dentist appointment....it turns out that it was Friday the 13th.  I had my first cavity EVER - and it was in A WISDOM TOOTH!  Apparently, it was a little more than a cavity....it was decay...I hadn't been brushing the tooth at all.....just because of the position of the tooth.

Luckily, my dentist has some pull and she was able to get me in to the oral surgeon first thing Monday morning.

Exactly one week later....I'm wisdom toothless.

Folks, my mouth hurts.  A LOT.

I had never had a cavity in my life - not even in my baby teeth!  Spending 28 years breezing in and out of the dentist chair with a smile and a goodie bag really just doesn't adequately prepare one for the trauma of wisdom teeth removal.

Sadly, although I've wanted to curl up in a fetal position and sleep until it's all over I haven't been able to.  Why?  Because I'm moving!  Agh!

My family has been amazing.  I've been boxing, and cleaning, and finishing up last minute house projects.  Today I even managed to sell my car (that can be a different story for a different day because it was definitely a My Life Is So Weird Moment).

My Dad sent me a pretty bouquet of flowers....that was a major highlight this week.

I wanted to write a long post about all of my thoughts on teeth....I've had many strange thoughts in the last few days....that might be from the vicodin....but I'm already worn out.

It will be sooo nice to get a full night sleep without a throbbing mouth!!!  Wish me luck!

Orange Goodness

I've been a bit of a sourpuss lately.  The highlight of my day is waking up and making an orange goodness.  I know I've mentioned that preparing my coffee is a critical part of my morning routine.  Here is what it looks like....

*My daily life is feeling a little overwhelming these days....the blog is suffering for it....I'll try to get back on track soon...

I've been thinking about writing this post for a very long time. Some things just aren't easy to talk about!  (Especially when they highlight your own hypocrisy and disregard for your personal well being.)  That being said, I believe it's time....

I found this youtube which is a public service announcement created in Canada by the David Cornfield Melanoma Fund.  (warning, this vid makes me cry...and it might make you cry too...)

Here's my story:

I'm very fair skinned.  I was born with red hair...that now fluctuates between brown and blonde and something that sometimes looks red.  I have blue eyes and I get freckles...and moles.  My skin was not designed for a Hawaiian childhood.  My Mother would battle with me at the beach to keep sunscreen on.  I'd be in the water all day long - she'd get me to come out slather some lotion on and have me sit on the blanket until she thought it was dry enough and then I'd be off like a rocket back into the water.

When I was 13 I had my first brush with skin cancer.  I went into the dermatologist for concerns about acne....it was like the Dr. could barely look at my face because he was so concerned with my skin!  I ended up having a full body 'inspection' and he decided that two of my moles looked 'suspicious'.  I could go on and on and on about how this particular doctor had the most atrocious bed side manner I've ever encounter coupled with a lateral lisp that makes him sound ridiculous.  (Imagine an individual with a lateral lisp saying, 'these moles look suspicious....they may be a basal cell carcinoma' - it's pretty hard to take seriously - but you do because he has his head in your lap with a magnifying glass inspecting your legs.)  I ended up going home with antibiotics and retin-a for my face and two oozing wounds on my back.  The lab results came back as 'pre-cancerous' - It shook me up for awhile.

Then I hit high school....I was surfing and sunning and camping and hiking.  I didn't always take sunscreen with me to the beach....and I did crazy things like mix coconut oil with lotion to use as sunscreen.  I sailed on the Makali'i and got such a bad sunburn on my lips that they literally split open and left me with scars.

I left Hawaii and headed off to Maine - the good news is that I really didn't get too many sunburns in Maine...the bad news is that I learned how to sail and spent lots of time on boats....where I got lots of sunburns.  I delivered a sailboat from Maine to Rhode Island - along the way I fell asleep on deck - it was freezing cold and I was totally bundled up - but I burned my eyelids and my eyes swelled shut for three days.

With all my time spent at the beach...and on the water....no one would have described me as tan...ever.

When I was 25 (or thereabouts) I got this thing on my shoulder that felt like a scab.  It was pale pink and it had a slightly raised edge.  I'd worry at it.  I thought that it wasn't healing because I kept disturbing the scab.  Except then I started to notice that it was getting bigger...and the portion that looked the a scab went all the way around the perimeter.  I was sailing in the Persian Gulf at this time.  I would wear tank tops and shorts on deck because it was so freakin' hot.  I had a shipmate who noticed the spot and started to give me crap about it....he had had his own brushes with skin cancer (ironically he was a haole who grew up in Hawaii, too).  I'd come back to work and he'd say 'megalotomus, did you get that checked out yet?!' - but I knew it was going to be bad news so I kept putting it off.  It took me about a year to finally go have it looked at.

When I finally went into the Doctor I was 26 and I had a 9mm Basal Cell Carcinoma on my left shoulder.  It took twelve stitches to close the incision when it was removed.  It was a long slow healing process.  It was on a part of my body that stretches and works often - plus, I had to go back to work....where I was really stretching it and working it often.

Here's the part that's shameful.  I went back to work in the Persian Gulf and continued to wear tank tops and shorts with no sunscreen.  I seldom wear a hat...not only do I get sun on my arms....I expose my scar to the sun.  My scar now has freckles.

I was hanging out at the pool in Florida with some guys who ship.  I had on my bikini and was just doing my thing.  One of the guys says, 'baby, come here and let me look at this...'  I wander over wondering what he's referring to.  He turns me around and lightly runs his finger down my scar.  I say, 'oh, this is my skin cancer scar'.  He looks at me like, 'this girl is crazy!  Why doesn't she have a shirt on!'....but instead just says, 'oh, honey'....and we leave it at that.

I was at the parade the other day sitting in the hot sun with no sunscreen on, no sun hat on, and a tank top exposing my scar.  My Auntie tore me a new one....I gave her some cocka-mi-mi story about how who cares, it doesn't matter, I've gotta live my life and I love the sun...blah, blah, blah.

Here's the thing, I DO LOVE THE SUN!  I love the feeling when you come home from the beach and you're sunburned and your hair is crunchy from the salt.  You have to take a cool shower because a hot one hurts....and then you lay naked on your sheets because your body is emitting so much heat.  I LOVE that feeling.  I love when you are laying out in the sun and you can literally feel the sun rays entering your body and warming your insides....when you get up and shake out your towel you literally feel like you're a new person.

Here in Hilo we constantly talk about how we're waiting for the 'big one'.  It could be a big volcanic eruption, a big earthquake, a big tsunami, a big hurricane...we all know there will be something big and we're just waiting for it.  Sometimes I think that I'm just waiting for the big one.  I'm just waiting for Melanoma....a Basal Cell wasn't enough to shake me up.

Even though it's a struggle I am trying to change my school of thought.  What I haven't totally figured out is why it is such a struggle.    I want to wear sunscreen and cover up....I don't want to be a crazy wrinkley 40 year old....I want to live to a ripe old age....and I really don't want to get Melanoma.

My Cousin Rhiannon is going to participate in the Ride To Conquer Cancer (please read HERE).  I'm ridiculously proud of her.  Of all the people who have just learned that I don't routinely wear sunscreen - I'm the most embarrassed for her to find out - she's going to Ride To Conquer Cancer - and I can't even slather on some sunscreen.

STUFF.

I've spent $40,000 on shoes and I have no place to live?

I will literally be the old woman who lived in her shoes.

-Carrie from Sex and the City

This is how I'm feeling.  Nothing will make you realize more quickly how ridiculous your debt to income ratio is than moving out of your house and being slapped in the face by the sheer volume of 'stuff'.  I too have an insane amount of shoes.

My bed normally has sheets on it....I was actually doing laundry....shocker!

I'm about to let the cat out of the bag: I'M MESSY. This is what my room looks like after I get home....my suitcase literally explodes.....

I always clung to the fact that I was messy not dirty. Pretty soon though, the mess was so big that I really couldn't clean even if I wanted to!

So....now I have cleaning ladies! It is like required cleaning. I don't really like other people to see my mess on the whole but, the cleaning ladies can't clean if the room is a mess. So it's like a win win situation! I'm forced to clean up my mess and then someone else does the rest of the work! Ha!

I broke down and got a housekeeper after I returned home last time. The house had been closed up for so long that there was a fine layer of mold on every surface of my home...the floors, counter tops, walls. The time before that I came home to a mouse infestation. I spent hundreds of dollars at the laundromat washing every single thing in the linen closet. It really really sucks to get home and then spend the first week cleaning. So this time while I was away I had the house cleaned every other week. It was wonderful. I could open my house up to travelers and not worry what they'd find! It was especially wonderful to come home to a crisp and clean house and be able to just crawl into bed without worrying about having an allergy attack! Plus, now that I'm home I can just worry about picking things up...which is clearly more than enough of a challenge for me...and I don't have to worry about picking things up and scrubbing the shower!

I'm not sure why I'm airing my dirty laundry in such a public forum (literally). I just felt strangely liberated yesterday when I picked up all my clothes put them into drawers and left the house....only to come back to sparkling countertops and gleaming floors. The moral of the story? Don't be ashamed to admit your short comings and get some help! My Mother always says, 'behind every great woman is a great team'. Too true!

28

Yesterday was my birthday.  It was one of those weird birthdays.  The kind of birthday where you are almost anti-excited....which bums you out...so you try to over compensate and have the best birthday ever.  But you just can't have the best birthday ever because those require planning and preparations and when you are anti-excited you just can't muster the motivation to do those things.  In general I'd say I'm in a bit of a funk - I'd love to choose a word that sounds less dramatic than 'funk' but I just can't come up with anything else.  I think my funk is really just a by product of my productivity.  I've been getting a lot done lately...although they haven't necessarily been fun things to get done...then, when I have a free moment I kind of feel idle and slightly lost.  My mind and body also know that there are some big things happening very soon (i.e. moving out of my house and taking my exams).....it's almost like I'm relishing in my funk now because if I don't I simply won't have the time to funk later.  I realize that many who are reading this will scoff however, this birthday made me a feel a little old.  I was on the phone with a friend last night and I expressed this sentiment.  He seemed to think it was funny.  So, I carried on and tried to explain why I feel so much older....exasperated I finally said, 'listen, doesn't 28 just sound older than 27?!'  as soon as I said it I had to laugh.  All that being said (or all that being rambled - you choose), I didn't want to let this birthday go by unrecognized.  Then I found this quote:

The cure for anything is salt water - sweat, tears, or the sea.   Isak Dinesen

How true.  So I did what any self respecting Hilo resident would do.....I told my Mom to call in sick and headed over to Kona for a girls only beach day (any DOE employee reading this please note she actually took a personal day - huge difference but it doesn't sound nearly as bad ass as calling in sick).

Here's the day in a nutshell:  We woke up early and hit the road by 0715.  Brief stop for coffee and breakfast sandwiches.  Beach by 0930.  I talked my Mom into walking into Makalawena.  It's my ultimate favorite (but she doesn't like it cause there is no shade) - but seriously, how could she argue....it was my birthday!  We took our time on the walk so I could take lots of photos.  By about 1130 we saw some big black clouds....I was feeling a little more cautious then usual because I had my camera....so we headed back so we could be a little closer to the car if it started to rain.  By the time we were putting things in the car it was drizzling.  So we decided to head into Kailua-Kona for a bit to eat and some window shopping.  By the time we got to the Kona Brewing Company it was torrential downpouring with crazy thunder and lightning (I should let you all know that this is waaaaay unusual for Kona....maybe Hilo....but to leave the Hilo rain looking for sun and have it be raining in Kona and sunny in Hilo is a little bit of a slap in the face) - of course they seated us outside.  I know right?!  Why would they do that?!  So lunch was an adventure.  By the time we were finishing up our lunch the weather had already blown over.  So we hit a few more beaches and a few more shops on the way home.  Home by dinner time.  Then I made dinner and talked on the phone and by the time I hopped into bed I was pooped.  Perfect day!
