Merrie Monarch (part I)

Okay, we're going to do this in stages.  This past weekend was Merrie Monarch.  This is a VERY big deal in Hilo, HI.  I took over 700 photos this weekend!!!  So, I'm going to post photos in sections....because it is taking me forever to weed through them!  My Mother has been requesting photos of the Pa'u Riders.  I'll have to write a long diligent e-mail about the significance of the Merrie Monarch festivities.  For now (because I've spent hours going through photos) you're getting the short version.  There is an annual hula competition.....we love it.  We also love the craft fairs, yummy food booths and parade.  We really love the parade....because that's where you get to see the Pa'u Riders.  The Pa'u Riders ride in groups representing each island.  They decorate their horses (and their princesses) with the flowers that belong to each island.  They are majestic and full of Aloha.  I love looking at the lei's and head pieces worn by rider and horse alike.  It's truly beautiful.  (I told you that it was the short version...)

The War On Terror....Hilo Style.

Ho-kay SO.  I can't believe I'm about to fess up to this...buuuttt....one of the reasons that I want to sell my house (or at least move out of it) is that there are spiders.  BIG SPIDERS.  (Warning, because we are talking about big spiders there is swearing involved.) Last night I went over to my Auntie's house to watch American Idol (we will at some point need to discuss this season of idol).  I had a lovely evening (complete with chips, guacamole and delicious cocktails).  I get home and start flipping on lights....when I see this little bastard scurrying from the corner of my bedroom closet.  WTF.

I realize that it is difficult to determine its size from the photo alone....it was about the size of my closed fist....and it was a baby!!!

This particular type of spider is called a Cane Spider.  For a little light reading you can follow this LINK to Wikipedia.

I'm not a particularly squeemish individual.  I grew up in Honomu in a plantation house that was pretty much wide open.  Bugs are a way of life in Hawaii.  Roaches, ants, centipedes, geckos, other lizards, termites, mosquitos...you name it we got it.  They honestly don't bother me!  Kill em and move on!  Our Honomu house was on the opposite side of the gulch from the cane fields.  Every now and then we'd find one of these spiders tucked away in a dark corner.  I'd like to reiterate every now and then!  I only have true memories of two incidents where a cane spider was in the house!  One time was especially memorable because it was in the shower.

When I first moved into this house I caught 6 in one month!  I use the term 'caught' lightly....if I find one I do my ultimate best to kill it.

One night I woke up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night....I flipped on the light and there was a BIG DADDY SPIDER on the ceiling above my bed.  I've never slept without a light on again.  I need to be able to wake up instantly survey my surroundings and tuck and roll out of bed if I discover I have a 'lurker'.

I've also tried every capture method possible....why?  Because they are amazingly fast!  I have a butterfly net that I keep under my nightstand...with a tool I created which I lovingly refer to as the 'whapper'.  The whapper is a couple of rolled up manila file folders that I have fortified with elastic rubber bands.

I've also tried poison....I got some 'spider spray' but it ended up being awful.  All it really did was make them not be able to run as fast.  The stuff was so potent that I ended up having to evacuate the house.

You may be thinking, 'why doesn't she call the exterminator?!'.  Did you know that you can't kill spiders with gas like you would a termite....it would just take too much....you can't kill them like a roach because they don't lick their feet.  You basically have to find the nest.  If you think I'm going 'hunting' for a nest full of these guys you are absolutely nuts.

The rational part of my brain understands that they are relatively harmless.  They eat bugs...less mosquitos is good right?!  They aren't poisonous.  They run away when they see you...sorta.  Unfortunately, they are really big, really brown, really hairy, and have icky pincer like things in the front.  In short, they are freaky as fuck.

You will be happy to note that I have refined the killing process.  I now have an all natural spray that contains tea tree oil.  I spray the area surrounding the spider so that when he starts to run he slips....this gives me a little extra time to thoroughly 'douse' him...otherwise he is almost too fast for me to spray.  Once I start to douse him he curls up.  This is when I start to clobber him with my rubber slipper.

So, logically, if you have to wait to kill them one by one...and you have no idea where their nest is....it means they are here to stay and have in effect won the war.

Which means I have to move.

Aloha Kakahiaka!

One of my all time favorite things to do when I'm home is wake up really early.  I get up and make some coffee (my signature orange goodness - I'll have to officially blog about this soon).  I throw on a hoodie or a hat and I head down to the water with my coffee and camera.  I like to be there right when the sun is coming up.  I especially like it when I'm the only person there.

Sometimes I sit on the rocks and just watch...and sometimes I wander around with my camera.  Every morning is a little bit different.  Sometimes I see turtles and sometimes I see colorful fish - lately I've been seeing nothing!  I was sitting on the rocks one morning when a little ray came up from the sand right below my feet (my Mom was with me thank goodness...its so much more fun to be able to share something that cool with someone else)!

Lately our mornings have been really wet.  Sometimes I wait out the drizzles in the car and sometimes I sit under the lifeguard tower.  Lots of clouds and misty horizons - I'll take it anyway it comes!

The second part of the morning routine occurs when I get home.  I have been wandering around my yard taking photos of dripping wet plants.  My favorite photos hands down have been the shots of the taro leaves.  Love these huge life sustaining leaves!

Soooo...

Aloha Kakahiaka!

A big good morning from Hilo!

Happy Hilo Town

I made it home to Hilo!  I flew in on the last flight Saturday evening.

I woke up first thing Sunday morning and attended the Sunrise Service.  The time change was majorly in my favor because by 0400 I was bright eyed and bushy tailed.  Unfortunately as we got to the waterfall site - which was gorgeous - with a waterfall in the background and a panoramic ocean view - it started to rain and the wind was majorly thrashing...so we ended up in a pavilion...still cool.

I'm sure many of you don't want to hear this...but following the sunrise service I went home to put on warmer clothes.  I was freezing!  Once I had on jeans and a sweater I figured I may as well attend the regular morning service.  I was so glad I did!  I ended up hiding the eggs for the hunt!  Turns out hiding them is waaay more fun than finding them!

After church I went home and changed my clothes again.  By 1100 the sun was out and the day was gorgeous.  I went to a friends house for his annual Easter Luau.  It was such an amazing way to slide into the back at home groove.  There were about 150 people eating, drinking, talking and having fun.  There were TONS of kids and the food was ONO(delicious)!

I ended the day at my Parents house for a totally delicious ham dinner.  I love spending time in my old house!  It has views to die for!  I can sit in the side yard and space out over lovely Hilo town for hours on end.

Sleepy Hilo Town...
The family hang out.

Talk about a totally perfect day.  I couldn't have asked for a better first day home!

Latest Musical Discovery....

So...I've been hearing this song A LOT. Feel free to watch the video...WARNING...IT'S DIRTY.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gyLR4NfMiI

Then I ran across this version...and the good news is....IT'S SQUEAKY CLEAN!  (The slightly bad news is that you have to watch the first one to really appreciate the genius of the second one.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khCokQt--l4

The first one serves a purpose...at a club it scores higher in the booty shaking category.  Also, sometimes its fun to say bad words.

The second one made me smile...so I tracked 'em down.  They are actually a group called Karmin!  You can find some more of their stuff on iTunes.  I could imagine myself listening to them in the middle of the night on a bridge watch.
